Chamber Street E1: Planning And Beyond
In January of this year we achieved planning permission for our new project at 55-56 Chamber Street E1 next to our aparthotel, the Rockwell East and our offices at 31-33 Prescot Street. It replaces a derelict railway viaduct with a 9 & 10 storey building and a modern two storey office building behind the remaining railway viaduct, adding another 34 rooms to the aparthotel, and creating a new office spaces for SME’s in each building on Ground & 1st at roughly 3,000 sqft [gross]. Our design team, led by our architects Simon Smith and Khalim Maudarbocous, have designed a building that is separate to but part of the neighbouring structures, linked at ground and basement only, and sensitively reflects their modern architectural language whilst using variegated brick colours to remind us of the terraced housing that was here in Georgian and Victorian times. We have concentrated upon a sustainable outcome here with concentration upon the use of air source heat pumps for energy generation and with every area possible being used for biodiversity. The design incorporates a gated courtyard for use by hotel guests and office workers as well and incorporates part of the shrapnel damaged wall of the viaduct which will remain as a memorial to the victims and survivors of the Blitz in Spitalfields.
